RiassuntoVengono analizzati gli aspetti socio-demografici dei meccanismi messi in opera dalle popolazioni animali per regolare la propria densità numerica.Negli animali la regolazione demografica è un fenomeno legato alla strategia finalistica della Natura. D'altro canto lo scopo principale della Natura è la continuità della specie nelle migliori condizioni di vita e di congruità nell'ambiente.Il sistema migliore per esaminare come le specie animali limitino il numero dei propri individui al fine di mantenersi in equilibrio con l'ambiente è quello di studiare le (...) popolazioni delle varie specie.L'approccio ottimale per l'analisi del divenire di una popolazione si ha esaminando la sua densità, struttura, natalità, mortalità e dispersione.Inoltre la stabilità di una popolazione nel tempo è regolata da fattori densità-dipendenti. Invece i fattori non legati alla densità possono portare all'estinzione della popolazione. Fattori densità-dipendenti sono la competizione interindividuale, la capacità riproduttiva, la emigrazione, la predazione e i rapporti sociali. Tutti questi fattori mettono in essere un insieme di automatismi tipo feed-back negativi che permettono la stabilizzazione numerica temporale della popolazione.Nel tentativo di mantenersi congrue all'ambiente le popolazioni animali mettono in opera, o subiscono sotto la spinta evolutiva, altri meccanismi di autocompensazione come: manifestazioni comportamentali come territorialismo e dominanza sociale agiscono da regolatori del numero di individui nelle popolazioni animali. Infine si puntualizza il ruolo della selezione r (tasso intrinseco di accrescimento) e k (capacità biologica specifica) nella costituzione di popolazioni rispettivamente a strategia opportunistica, che conquistano nuovi habitat, o a strategia stabile, che vivono in habitat a maggiore durata. W.N.Α. Klever's claim that he has discovered new Spinoza texts is unfounded in every respect. The seventeenth-century manuscript annotations in a copy of Spinoza's Opera posthuma, kept in Leiden University Library (shelf mark 755 F 32), do not originate in the circle of Spinoza's friends, nor do they contain any material that derives from the philosopher himself. They are an intelligent reader's comments, and as such they constitute an important document of the immediate reception of Spinoza's philosophy. Sofar, the (...) author has not been identified. It was certainly not Spinoza's correspondent E.W. von Tschirnhaus, and Klever's attempt to attribute the annotations to Tschirnhaus is a dismal failure: the four arguments adduced to substantiate this claim are altogether spurious. Ausonius has become a more accessible writer since the appearance of Professor Green's acclaimed commentary on him in 1991, which among other things stimulated discussion of his text and the textual tradition. This newly revised text takes advantage of recent criticism, both conservative and conjectural, and re-examines the difficulties inherent in the long held view that extant manuscripts derive independently from separate authorial editions. The opportunity has been taken to reassess earlier decisions on various problematic passages and to introduce several (...) new emendations, either in the text or in the apparatus criticus. There is a newly written introduction, in English, the apparatus criticus has been pruned, the concordances expanded, and the bibliography updated. The works in this new Oxford Classical Texts version of the text follow the same order as was established in Professor Green's previous edition of 1991. (shrink)

In this article we focus upon the embodiment of vulnerability as an area in which medicine, society and the humanities can be profitably conjoined. We illustrate our argument with two interrelated case studies of narratives of the embodiment of ageing and longevity. First, we draw upon Leoš Janáček’s opera The Makropulos Case (1926) as a locus for debates about human longevity. Second, we discuss 70-year-old Janáček’s decade of unrequited love for a woman 37 years younger than himself, through an (...) examination of their intimate letters. We suggest that both the opera and elements of Janáček’s biography illuminate the passionate emotions that are often hidden behind ‘the mask of ageing’. Finally, we propose that a focus on the embodiment of vulnerability is a productive catalyst for research on narratives of ageing. (shrink)

The past years have seen the official completion of the Opera Omnia of Nicholas of Cusa and have witnessed, as well, the production of a plethora of new studies on this fifteenth-century thinker. It is no longer enough, however, to be familiar with scholarship in German, Italian, and English in order to have a comprehensive view of the newer Cusanus research. One must also have a command of Spanish and Portuguese as well. An informal survey of the Philosopher's Index, (...) by no means exhaustive, of the secondary literature on Cusa reveals that over the last decade, the ratio approaches 1:1 when one compares Spanish and Portuguese entries on Cusa with those in other languages. Although Cusa was already a figure of interest in these two countries in the early 1960s, due in no small part to the work of Eusebio Colomer involving Ramon Llull, and that of Mariano Álvarez-Gómez, one can now see the work of these earlier scholars bearing fruit in the work of their students and their students' students. Dans l'immense correspondance de Leibniz son échange épistolaire avec Goldbach occupe une certaine place. 4 lettres de Leibniz à Goldbach ont été publiées à son temps par Ch.G.W. Kortholt dans les deux premiers volumes de Leibnitii Epistolae ad diversos (t. I-IV, Lipsiae, 1734-1742) et rééditées par L. Dutens (Leibniz: Opera omnia, t. 3 et 5, Genevae, 1768). Récemment on a découvert 6 lettres de Goldbach à Leibniz conservées aux Archives Centrales d'Etat des Actes Anciens (= ACAA) à Moscou et (...) encore un extrait de lettre de Leibniz à Goldbach à Hannover. Cela fait, pris ensemble, une jolie collection de 11 lettres dont la traduction russe fut publiée en 1983. Nous en présentons maintenant le texte original latin avec une brève introduction et des notes. Une lettre, comme on va voir, y manque. (shrink)
